Becoming a Great Leader (And the Traits that Define One)
In the past two articles we have covered the traits that make a great press operator; and the skills necessary to become a successful print sales person. But what about the person in charge of the entire operation?
- Be enthusiastic.
Leaders make believers out of those around them. To get others to buy into your beliefs and values, you must make your passions felt. Remember, others feed off your energy. Give them a reason to believe! - Lead by example.
Familiar with the popular phrase, ‘actions speak louder than words’? Leaders take it to heart. They embrace their responsibility for setting positive examples for others. Some of the most revered qualities of a leader are their honesty and integrity. Leaders hold themselves to such high expectations that it inspires those around them to strive for more. - Foster confidence in your team.
Confidence is contagious, and leaders have a way of sharing it with others. Enable your team to do their best – even in times you physically aren’t present – by instilling confidence in them. Make a habit of pointing out the things they do well and compliment them often. When opportunities for constructive feedback arise, be sure to find some good to go along with the bad. - Never let ‘em see you sweat.
Even in challenging times, leaders are able to maintain their composure. Panic, much like wildfire, spreads easily. If those around you sense concern, they will find reasons to worry also. This not only creates distractions, but it can severely damage team morale. No mater the situation, leaders always try to maintain their cool. - Protect your people.
Great leaders go out of their way to stand up for their team. This can mean many things, from fighting on their behalf to protect reputations to knowing when they are at capacity and protecting them from additional projects. - Give credit, take blame.
Leaders put the well-being of others ahead of themselves. During times of praise, leaders are quick to acknowledge all those involved and ensure that recognition is spread throughout the team. Similarly, during difficult times, leaders do not hesitate to take on responsibility themselves.
