Celebrating Craft and Partnership with The American Craft Council

No one understands the culture of craft better than the American Craft Council. A national, nonprofit educational organization, ACC has been shaping the discussion around craft for decades.

The ACC has served as a chronicler and tastemaker through the bimonthly magazine American Craft, annual juried shows presenting artists and their work, through leadership conferences, awards for excellence, a research library, workshops and seminars.

As makers in our own right, Mohawk has taken pride in the craft of papermaking for nearly a century. Generations of fine papermakers have honed their craft in our mills in upstate New York, so we are endlessly inspired by the artistry of others and we’re proud to support and be a part of the craft movement. As like-minded supporters of the community, Mohawk believes making is the most fundamental expression of the human spirit, so we are proud to partner with the American Craft Council to support their mission.

The American Craft Council recently re-introduced an awards initiative designed to recognize and support emerging talent in the fields of contemporary craft, decorative arts, and design. The American Craft Council Emerging Voices Awards recognize a short list of six emerging artists and scholars.

Perry Price, Director of Education at the ACC describes his excitement about the Emerging Voices Project and the need to create a memorable print component, “Early on in the project, we thought about how important it would be to create a physical document as a moment in time when these artists were being recognized.”

To appropriately acknowledge the award recipients and their work, Price selected Joseph D. O’Leary, owner and founder of Veto Design to develop a printed publication featuring thoughtful essays and stunning portraits of each award recipient’s work. The publication, which also features photography by O’Leary, is grand in scale, design and imagery.

O’Leary describes his inspiration: “I wanted the portraits (of the artists) to be emerging, to play off the title, to emerge from the darkness, like a chapter opening for each artist…up close and personal, in large format, with in some cases full bleed, and incredible detail.”

The 9.5 x 14-inch publication features a luxurious, tactile cover printed on Mohawk Loop Antique Vellum Digital with i-Tone, Urban Grey 110 DTC (Sustainable Collection). The title of the book pops in PMS Yellow 012 and white ink, and coordinates beautifully with bright yellow book cloth binding. 

Text pages were printed on Mohawk Superfine Eggshell Digital with i-Tone, Ultrawhite, 80t (Beautiful Collection), resulting in truly outstanding print resolution of photography. The limited-edition book was printed at the Mohawk Print Innovation Center in Albany, New York on an HP Indigo 5600 Digital Press.
