This year Mohawk rolled out a new print advertising campaign called “Champions of Craft,” featuring a series of storytelling ad inserts created to recognize and support the work of aspiring and seasoned designers and makers.

In the July/August 2015 issue of GDUSA, we highlight Lab Partners, a husband and wife team based in San Francisco, CA.

Take one glance at the bright and playful work of Sarah Labieniec and Ryan Meis, and it will be no surprise that they love what they  do. In 2007, the husband and wife team made a letterpress print for family and friends to announce their move to San Francisco. Now they have a thriving studio near Union Square where they collaborate on projects for a vast and illustrious client list.

“While working on a project, and especially in the early stages, we tend to share numerous bits of scrap and visual inspiration,” Labieniec says. “It is through this process of sharing and collecting that we develop a common visual vernacular that we think would be right for a project or simply fun to explore. Then we dive in and in actuality we find a lot of inspiration just through doing and making. Quite often we will start in one place and then end up somewhere that we didn’t quite expect.”

Labieniec continues, “That is one of the things that keeps illustration and design inspiring to us. Those little serendipitous moments. And having both of us working on a project just doubles those chances for inspiration.”
