The Future is Bright for the Heart of America Boy Scout Council.  That’s the message this Midwest Scout Council wanted to convey in their 2014 annual report.

To notify stakeholders of the report’s availability, Walz Tetrick Advertising, of Kansas City worked with Spangler Graphics to design a simple 5×7” announcement card using photochromic ink to emphasize that message.

Creating a simple announcement card was a major departure for the Boy Scout Council, which has always printed their annual reports. Over the years, Walz Tetrick has won numerous ad industry awards for their Boy Scout designs. To drive recipients online instead, the agency knew they needed to create something eye catching.

“Scouting goes beyond campfires and hiking. It prepares youth for life, making a lasting difference for our community.”

They started with a woodcut-style illustration of an outdoor scene. Short copy seems to speak in the voice of a Scout:  “Take me outside. See what I can do.” When the card is exposed to sunlight, glow-in-the-light ink brings the mountain scene to life. In just a few seconds a bright sunrise, tent and additional copy appear: “The Future is Bright. Visit www.hoacannualreport.com.” The simple yet effective card grabs the recipient’s attention and sends them to the online annual report which is an interesting blend of movement and statistics on the council’s website.

The annual features membership numbers, donor lists, financial summaries and heartfelt testimonials: “Scouting goes beyond campfires and hiking. It prepares youth for life, making a lasting difference for our community.” Mark Jorgenson, Market President, US Bank-Kansas City.

The paper for the card was selected because its sustainable attributes support the Scouting organization’s dedication to preserving the environment. The card was printed on Mohawk Loop Antique Vellum White 18 pt. stock (Sustainable Collection) which is made from 80% postconsumer waste fiber paper that is certified by the Rainforest Alliance Program for FSC® standards. RA-COC-000668. Mohawk Loop is also made carbon neutral within Mohawk’s production processes. In addition to purchasing enough Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to match 100% of the electricity used in our operations, the thermal energy used in the manufacture of this paper is offset through the purchase of carbon credits that fund renewable energy or emission reduction projects.
