“It feels luxe.” That’s how Bruce Watermann, Blurb’s SVP of Operations, describes the tactile nature of Mohawk Superfine.

Blurb, a self-publishing platform that makes it easy for users to design and publish all kinds of books, started using Superfine (Beautiful Collection) as an added paper option after they decided to raise their bar on what an on-demand, self-published book could look and feel like. “Once we printed some test books on Superfine, we knew we found our new gold standard,” Bruce says.

Superfine was added as a Blurb option in 2011. Since, Blurb authors have enthusiastically responded, and the paper choice has been used for nearly a quarter of a million Blurb books on demand of all types and sizes. In fact, Bruce says that Superfine is what Blurb prints titles on whenever they do trade shows and conferences and want to show off titles. “But one of my all-time favorites is by Roger Demuth, who was the Professor of illustration at Syracuse University,” says Bruce. “That title really shows off the tactile traits of Superfine as it highlights Roger’s watercolor creations.”

For seven decades, designers across a variety of disciplines have also gravitated toward Superfine for its super supple-to-touch printing surface, which is why the tried-and-true formula behind Superfine has only been slightly modified. Blurb also has a close-knit connection to the design community and Superfine was a choice that would both meet the tactile needs they were looking to add to their line-up and it’d be a familiar name to many due to its longevity and timeless appeal.
