On the Wire: Designer to Watch, Amy Heitman

Today, guest blogger, Sarah Schwartz, editor of Stationery Trends and The Paper Chronicles, chats with one of Stationery Trends’ Top Ten 2017 Designers to Watch about her career, inspiration and thoughts about paper.

Starting in 2010, every Winter Issue of Stationery Trends has featured a cavalcade of 10 Designers to Watch. There are no strict criteria to my selection process, rather I just know a perfect fit when I see it — I tend to sense that each person in every year’s special 10 is on a most interesting trajectory. Today it’s a real treat to share one of these personalities with Felt & Wire readers.

An artist, illustrator and mother of three, Amy Heitman is a former elementary art school teacher who debuted her illustrated greeting card range in January 2015. What sets her meticulously rendered flora and fauna apart is Amy’s sense of wonder, both for the too-often overlooked beauty and charm surrounding us as well as the bigger circle of life that we’re all trudging through. Tinged with nostalgia, her colorful, clever world is a joy to get lost in.

How did you get into stationery & paper design?
I left my teaching job when my daughter was born to be home with her, and began designing wedding invitations and custom stationery for friends and family. So, I opened an Etsy shop. Eventually I had too many custom requests to keep up with on my own and decided to launch a wholesale collection.

What role do you see paper playing in your work?
Paper is central my work and it is super important to me that the paper reflect the quality of my designs and our brand. I think the look and feel of a paper communicates so much and luxurious papers can elevate even the simplest of notes.

What types of papers are you generally drawn? Which Mohawk paper is your favorite and why?
I love papers that feel special and a bit velvety. Mohawk Superfine Eggshell is my absolute favorite, I love the weight and toothiness of it, and how it just feels ‘special.’

What recent release of yours best represents your personal style?
Our new spring collection for 2017 is probably my favorite so far, it feels charming, sweet, and a tad nostalgic yet fresh at the same time.

Can you give us a sneak peek of a project you are developing?
I’m so excited about our new Land, Air, Sea collection of cards and wrap that we will be debuting at the stationery show in May. It is inspired by natural elements and infused with a bit of charm and nostalgia.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
I love cooking with my kids and working with my family in our little vegetable garden, Really I love doing anything outdoors with the people I love: bike riding, picnicking, exploring.

What blogs/books/publications do you find yourself getting lost in?
I love non-fiction and auto-biographies, I always find it so fascinating to get inside someone else’s head.  I am currently halfway through Erin Loechner’s book “Chasing Slow,” which is SO good.
