The New England Science and Sailing Foundation (NESS) is a non-profit organization that engages children and adults in ocean-based experiential learning opportunities to build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills.

With locations in Stonington, CT, Westerly, RI, and satellite locations across New London, CT (Ocean Beach Park, Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School, Greens Harbor Beach, and Mitchell College), NESS works year-round with families, schools, and organizations in New England to provide high-quality educational programs that blend an innovative curriculum with exciting ocean adventures, including courses in sailing, marine science, powerboating, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, surfing and ocean safety.

Sailing, marine science and adventure water sports are the Foundation’s core platforms for inquiry-based learning, teaching respect and responsibility for the sea, and creating connections with the community.

NESS recently revamped their marketing materials and the Foundation’s new Marketing Director, Maeve Ryan, approached the project with fresh eyes. Her goal was to enhance overall awareness of NESS and inform audiences about the organization’s year-round educational programs, while elevating the quality of the traditional rack card.

“When I began talking to the public about NESS, I found many people were surprised to learn about the extensive work we do with schools through our innovative educational programs and partnerships with places like STEM Magnet Middle School/Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School and Mitchell College, and by sponsoring field trips and providing programming for students of all ages. We had quite a lot of information to communicate in this marketing piece, and I wanted the format to command attention.”

The redesign transformed the existing traditional 3.75 x 8.5” glossy rack card-sized trifold into a tactile and vibrant 6 x 9” trifold on iconic Mohawk Superfine100# Cover Ultrawhite Smooth (Beautiful Collection). The piece was skillfully printed by J.S. McCarthy Printers on an HP Indigo 7600 press.

“The new trifold reflects the growth we’ve experienced over the past three years since our last trifold was printed. I felt that increasing the size and printing it on high-quality uncoated stock (vs. glossy stock) was essential to updating our image as a go-to resource for schools and as an ocean adventure nonprofit organization that now serves approximately 3,500 students per year,” said Ryan.

Working with designer Patti Murphy Designs of Stonington,  Ryan selected a cover image that seems to encompass all of the Foundation’s core offerings – sailing, marine science and ocean adventure.

“This new piece is proudly being distributed to donors and potential donors as fundraising collateral and can also serve as a stand-alone brochure for use at exhibits and conferences,” said Ryan. “We have received many compliments on the brochure and we’re very happy with the quality of Mohawk Superfine,” she added.
