The beauty of mail art is its low barrier to entry which gives anyone the ability to elevate the everyday to the extraordinary.

In October 2021 we introduced Paper With a Plan: A new attribute-driven approach to specifying paper. Mohawk refined and reorganized its paper portfolio into 5 distinct Collections that help make choosing paper by its properties and attributes easier. Mohawk’s paper grades are now grouped into the Beautiful, Sustainable, Expressive, Elevated, and Practical Collections.

Mohawk’s Elevated Collection is comprised of papers made from cotton and premium fibers for artful, elevated stationery and letterpress.

We know that nothing compares to the plush, tactile feel of paper made with cotton and premium fibers. The Mohawk Elevated Collection brings together a group of iconic papers that take printed communication to the next level with subtle elegance and craftsmanship in equal measure.

Traditionally used in stationery and letterpress, these papers lend a sense of permanence and gravitas to art and print design, pairing beautifully with embellishments such as embossing, engraving, and foil.

And what better way to demonstrate Elevated papers' inherent sophistication and sociability than using them to make mail art.

Anyone can doodle on a postcard, stick a stamp on it, and drop it in a mailbox. That's the beauty of mail art, it combines the everyday with the opportunity for artistic expression. It's democratic. This low barrier for entry brings a delightful permanence to freedom of expression we've come to associate more with the ephemeral, digital realm: the ability to elevate anything.

While mail art introduces limitations of size, weight, material, and required postage, it's otherwise a wide open space for the artist to fill in. It gives artists an opportunity to comment on communications and politics, even compelling the authorities (be they customs or censors) to unwittingly participate with a canceled stamp or a torn envelope. Personal mail is social, so mail art invites collaboration and network building.

Mail art is kept alive through any exchange of art whether it be a painted envelope, an artistamp, or the addition of collage to a postcard or other correspondence via post. Art in the mail is ultimately accessible to anyone who can afford the postage stamp, open to the artist's interpretation, and a delight for the recipient to open.

AIGA Takes a Fresh Look at Sending ♥ Through the Mail

Let’s say you want to show some designers how much you appreciate them. Not just any designers, mind you, but designers who are true advocates for design. In fact, designers who are the presidents of the 72 AIGA chapters across the U.S.
