Field Notes have become one of the most popular notebooks people use for daily musings, doodles and to-do lists. For the Spring 2017 edition, Field Notes introduced “Utility,” a notebook format perfect for any hard worker who may spend a bit of their time in a local hardware store…or for anyone that aspires to do so.

“People often ask, ‘Where do your ideas come from?’ In this case, it started with the cover paper,” says Bryan Bedell of Field Notes. “Utility” edition notebooks were printed on Mohawk Via Vellum Safety Yellow 80 cover (Similar: Expressive Collection). “The beautiful vibrant color of Via Vellum Safety Yellow jumped right out of the sample book like a DOT warning sign. It also brought to mind the yellow tape of a tape measure, which gave us another idea…”

This edition also contains a flip-out ruler that folds out of the back cover. “After ten years of making (and using) our memo books, we’ve come to realize that the ruler on the inside of the back cover is one of Field Notes’ most frequently-used but least-acknowledged features,” Bedell says. “We’ve been known to tear off a back cover of a filled-up book just to have an accessible ruler on hand around the office, workbench, or printing press.”
